Assessment time.

A great Easter weekend - weather gorgeous, food yummy - though somewhat marred by thoughts of assessment looming on Wednesday and the work not getting done for it. However just had a successful two hours and hopefully have broken the back of what needs to be provided at the 'interview' style assessment (gulp!) session. Keep picturing my favourite little corner of the house and my retro coffee table with a lovely cup of tea waiting for me when it's all over....

Crush On Yellow Continues Unabated.

This week in continued devotion to yellow I have:

Bought a great Elk bracelet up at our local florist ....

...sprayed an old mirror yellow and hung it up in the hall...

...drank from my favourite glass, a gift from friend Jodie...

...wished badly for a wall done in this flocked wallpaper!

Dreaming of Neon Yellow.

Not that long ago I was hating yellow. A reaction of having loved it throughout the 90s and covered my entire hallway in it. But now it's back. And being the sad old slave to fashion that I am I love it again. This time it's slightly neon. And that reminds me of the 1950s. And that's a good thing. (This chair is on ebay at the moment and way out of my league. But I can dream).

Even the local St Vinnies is getting in on the act. I drove by last week and was drawn back by the window dressing. They are getting so canny these days at Vinnies. And not just the window dressing. Remember when no one there had any inkling what something was worth? Nothing was ever over $10. Now they totally know the value of vintage. This dress for example (though not strictly vintage) was priced at $35.
Having said that I did score these platform shoes for $6 - patent leather and just my size. Why, they will be perfect for the school drop off I thought to myself. And just the thing for the after school grocery run. And Saturday morning junior cricket....

Book Review (of sorts).

While away last week I read Christos Tsolkias novel 'The Slap', the first book I've read since finishing the Twilight saga a few weeks ago. Much like the Twilight saga I could hardly put 'The Slap' down. Unlike the Twilight saga it was not an overly enjoyable read. In fact at times reading 'The Slap' felt like a receiving a big hard slap. Told from the perspective of eight different characters, who are present at a barbecue where one of them slaps a child who is not his own, this is a really ambitious novel. And not least for confronting a multitude of complex issues present, yet not always discussed, in contemporary Australian life. Not everyone thinks Christos Tsolkias manages to pull this off but personally, for the most part, I do. I think good on him for confronting all those sensitive issues like private school vs. public school, compromised relationships, casual drug use amongst the middle class, the realities of parenting etc etc. If I had only one criticism to make of this book it would be the unconvincing letter Connie's father wrote before he died and also that there were no handsome vampire characters to lighten things up a bit.

Inexpensive fun at home.

Todays afternoon fun took the form of:

A tent made of lounge cushions for Archie.

Extraction of a loose tooth with rusty barbeque tongs by Ruby.

Truly Scary.

Have spent a few years resisting the Hallowe'en thing on the grounds it is too American but, finally worn down, gave in this year and embraced a couple of the traditions. First making these Witchy cup cakes for the kids to decorate and second taking Archie and his friend Nicki from accross the road around our small cul de sac trick or treating (we reversed the trick or treat however by providing the treat ourselves - the witchy cupcakes).

Jazz Apple Cafe

Having to make an annoying unscheduled visit to the bank in civic last Friday (to fix up mistake THEY made) was sweetened by the discovery of a new cup cake cafe opened up a couple of door down from the bank. It's called the Jazz Apple Cafe and quite simply the cup cakes are INCREDIBLE. The kids chose Jaffa but I know somehow we will find a way to try them all - particularly keen to try the Jersey caramel and Lemon merangue. So rich Archie couldn't finnish his so I had to step in and do the job for him even though I knew the chocolate would give me a headache. The verdict: it was worth it.

High School Reunion 3

What a shock. High School Reunion committee has imploded with resignation of Chair. Reunion cancelled. Suggestions Chair has made off with Reunion Dinner fund. Say goodbye to $70 early bird payment. Reflect yet again on Chair's unhappy time at high school as most bullied student, his subsequent name change and motivation to be organising said reunion in first place.
Reflect on what this means for self. Find urgency to establish status career has lessened somewhat and decide to call off job hunt. Must be content as trophy wife for time being.

Inspired by Scandanavian Design.

Have constructed 1950s kidney shaped coffee table for dolls house out of balsa wood and recycled kabab skewers. (Yes, I know there may be some who think way too much time on her hands, get a job, yet still others may say You Go Girl!!! After all what better way of laying your family's financial future to waste than staying home all day constructing retro miniatures????

High School Reunion 2

Have committed to reunion and bought self a ticket ($70). Now all left is to decide what to wear on night and kickstart notable career that will leave old classmates in awe at rise in the world. Shipping Magnate being the obvious choice. To this end trotted off in heels on Tuesday to interview with recruitment agency. As have not been workforce participant for Seventeen years now was not sure what to expect but Melissah, the lovely agent who interviewed me and obviously did not think my CV too laughable, put me immediately at ease and we got right down to determining what area of workforce I might suit best. I didn't want to come right out and say "Shipping Magnate" but I did hint at it by saying "I see myself in Shipping" then proceeded to throw around words like "ilustrious" and "international".
Still not sure Melissah and I were on the same wavelength (she kept returning to words like "Human Resources" and "entry level") but now all left to do is wait by phone for job opening in selected feild. And as I say only three more weeks till reunion and to have established said career...

Vintage Shoe Find.

Amazing what you can find at the Salvos on a lucky day. Today these adorable vintage shoes for $5 (yes, I know - $5!!!). Black patent leather, a narrow square toe, grossgrain trim and cute bow. Plus with a chunky - yet somehow elegant - low square heel they are exactly what I was looking for. I could cry then that they secretly pinch my toes blue.

The Recruitment Agency.

Was horrified to find email in inbox this morning from the recruitment agency asking me to come in and have a chat with them about job possibilties. I mean I know I rang them on Friday and sent in my resume yesterday but whoever thought they would reply???? Did they read the resume? They must have missed the bit that said I haven't been in paid work for seventeen years. They must not have noticed the gaping Seven year gap of inactivity I provide no explanation for......
